All About Endometriosis

By: Jessica Matias

Endometriosis is a condition that can only ever happen to women. Why? Because only women have the necessary reproductive bits that make endometriosis possible. Endometriosis happens when the lining of a womans uterus "the endometrium- ends up in places where it isnt supposed to be: anywhere that ISNT the uterus.
Basically, endometrial cells are only ever supposed to be inside a womans uterus, but in some cases "the causes arent really all that clear- they end up in other places in the body.
Why? Well, because stuff that isnt supposed to be in certain places, actually are in certain places. In some really serious cases, tissue could even end up in unlikely but really sensitive places in the body, like the brain and the lungs. That can cause a great deal of trouble.
Most of the time, those stray endometrial cells will find their way into places near the uterus like a womans ovaries, fallopian tubes or intestines. In some cases, though, they might even clump around scar tissue, like caesarian section scars or laparoscopy scars, but that doesnt happen very often. In fact, it actually possible for endometrial cells to end up in places pretty far away from the uterus; like the brain or the spine, which can make things really serious. Happily though, those cases are even rarer.
However, there are some times when endometriosis can cause serious problems, like when the stray tissue ends up in really, REALLY unpleasant places, like the brain and the lungs. Even if the endometrial cells are in areas that arent as sensitive as those organs, endometriosis can still need medical attention.
One of the most common symptoms that women with endometriosis display is pain. Horrible, crippling, debilitating pain. Usually, that pain will be in the lower body, all the way down to the knees, and will flare up before a womans period begins, and then will abate when the blood flow slows down. Endometriosis can also cause serious problems with fertility and can make trying to conceive or start a family fairly difficult "even risky.
Finding stray endometrial tissue will usually be accomplished with a surgical procedure called laparoscopy. This procedure is usually also used to treat the condition and remove the adhesions that endometriosis causes, as well as diagnosing this.
If you want to avoid getting endometriosis altogether though, there are definitely things that you can do. Exercise is really great for you in a lot of ways, and it can help you prevent endometriosis as well. Its also a lot less likely for a person to get endometriosis if she gets pregnant earlier in her adult life rather than later. If you dont want get knocked up at a younger age though, oral contraceptives can apparently go a long way to preventing endometriosis, as well as regulating hormone levels.
