The Armless Chair's Evolution

By: Alexander Stone

Chairs have been used for centuries. In the old days they were used for state representation rather than for daily ordinary use. Of course today also the chair is still used for symbolic rituals. The person occupying the chair will have a title. It was not until the 16th century that chairs became more common. But in China as early as the 12th century chairs became common.
In Europe it was not until the renaissance that people attitude towards the chair shifted and they began seeing them more and more as ordinary pieces of furniture. To go back to ancient times, in ancient Egypt, chairs were treated as objects of art along with their symbolic value as seats of power. The amount of craftsman ship that went into them is simply beautiful, and they were made with exotic materials.
With the arrival of the 20th century and the industrial revolution like many industries the furniture industry changed dramatically. With the knowledge gained and better manufacturing techniques, expensive chairs became a thing of the past. Later on plastic steel and aluminum chairs were available and then newer designs were available on the market.
Now with the new found freedom available through new technology we see a whole variety of new designs and styles emerging from the factories. One of the most prominent of these designs is the armless chair. As the name suggests it's an ordinary chair without the "arms". These type of chairs are designed to be both ergonomic and practical. The absence of the arms means that it will take up less space.
This compact design allows for greater utility of the chair. It can be used in regular sized rooms or homes or even if you lived in a tent, this type of chair would feel perfectly at home. The compact design gives it unmatched versatility over any other design. But these are not the only reasons to buy this type of furniture. Nowadays there is a wide pool of designs and various materials to choose from, and make it fit whatever your taste style and budget.
