What Are Dioxins?

By: Rico Kidd

Dioxins is caused in manufacturing by-product due to combustion processes. A combustion process is the process of creating a product through burning fossil fuels, incineration and dying/bleaching through the use of chlorine.
There are small amounts of rayon and dioxin in sanitary napkins and tampons. The reason that there is a small amount of dioxin in sanitary napkins is due to the way manufacturers produce these products. Traditional manufacturing methods of producing sanitary napkins and tampons is to use cellulose fibers and wood pulp to create the product.
According to the FDA, the limit for dioxin detection is approximately .1 to 1 parts per trillion of dioxin. One part per trillion is like dropping a teaspoon of dioxin into a lake that is around 15 feet deeps and 1 square mile. However, with dioxin free alternatives out on the market, are you still willing to put something in your body that has even a small amount of dioxin?
When shopping for sanitary napkins and tampons, remember to look on the package to see if the product is listed as having chlorine free bleaching processes. If not, then the product you're buying may contain dioxin. The majority of name brand sanitary napkins and tampons in your typical grocery store do not use a 100% chlorine free bleaching process to cut on costs.
Cloth napkins are an alternative to traditional pads and tampons. The benefits of cloth napkins are that you can ensure that you will not be exposed to chemicals. However, washing the napkin and retaining freshness is a problem with cloth napkins. Another alternative is to buy 100% chlorine free napkins.
