What Causes Kidney Stones?

Kidneys keep your body free of waste products by filtering them out and expelling them through urination. Disruption in the normal balance of water, salts and mineral can cause the formation of kidney stones. Kidney stone is one of the most common and painful urological disorders.
A kidney stone is a pebble-like formation of waste products found in your urine. Take note, however, that it could also be as big as a golf ball. It may be secreted out of the body without your doctor?s intervention. But it may also cause lasting symptoms and complications that may involve major surgery to treat.
What causes kidney stones may vary from one person to another. Certain foods that may cause stone formation greatly rely on an individual's susceptibility. Eating a specific food may not promote kidney stones to form on those persons who are not susceptible.
Kidney stone problems are often related to family history. You are more likely to have a kidney stone if other members of your family have had them before. It can even be hereditary. Urinary tract infections and kidney disorders are linked to stone formation, as well.
Uric acid formation in the blood caused by a diet that's too high in protein has been shown to increase the risk of kidney stone formation. High level of uric acid can also be caused by gout, too much vitamin D intake, and blockage of the urinary tract. Increased amount of calcium in urine can eventually develop into kidney stones, too.
Dehydration, too much meat in the diet and high salt foods are some of the more common contributing factors to kidney stones becoming a problem. Drinking enough water will help in keeping your urine clear; avoid junk foods that have high salt content, and eating less meat.
On occasion a kidney stone can form but is never detected because of its small size. Most of the time, it causes sudden and severe pain while it travels from the kidney to the bladder. It may also cause nausea, vomiting and fever.
A healthy diet low in sodium and plenty of water consumption will lower a persons risk factor for developing kidney stones. Food with high level of calcium, salt and protein should be taken in moderation. And drinking enough liquid, water preferred, helps in excreting unwanted elements from your kidney.
